Opening New Chapter of Documentary Education in Asia
— YNAU Asian International Documentary Research Center Holds International Documentary Teaching Workshop
From October 15 to 16 in 2024, the Asian International Documentary Research Center at Yunnan Arts University (YNAU) held an international documentary teaching workshop. This event brought together leading experts and scholars from renowned universities and research institutions across Asia. It highlighted YNAU's extensive influence on documentary education in Asia and created a knowledge feast that blended academic depth with artistic appeal.
The international documentary teaching workshop was held at the Film and Television School of YNAU, with expert speakers from top domestic institutions such as the Beijing Film Academy and the China Academy of Art. Experts and professors from Chung-Ang University in South Korea and the Japan Institute of the Moving Image also contributed video presentations for the workshop. Students and faculty engaged in in-depth interactions and experience sharing, discussing documentary creation practices and jointly opening a new chapter in Asian documentary education.
Professor Meng Zhong: Narrative Techniques in Documentary
On the afternoon of October 15, 2024, the inauguration of the Asian International Documentary Research Center of YNAU and the international documentary teaching workshop commenced at our university. Professor Meng Zhong from the Department of Literature at Beijing Film Academy delivered the opening lecture to our faculty and students, titled Narrative Techniques in Documentary.
Professor Du Haibin: Evolution of Documentary Filmmaking Through the Lens of the West Lake International Documentary Festival
On October 16, 2024, at 1:30 p.m., Professor Du Haibin, a renowned documentary director from the School of Film at the China Academy of Art, conducted a workshop titled Evolution of Documentary Filmmaking Through the Lens of the West Lake International Documentary Festival. Professor Takaharu Yasuoka, Director of the Department of Documentary at Japan Institute of the Moving Image, also joined the event via video to engage with attendees.
Professor Zhang Xianmin: Bloodlines and Geopolitics—Revisiting the Connections Between Asian and Chinese Documentaries
At the same time, a workshop themed Bloodlines and Geopolitics—Revisiting the Connections Between Asian and Chinese Documentaries was held in the Smart Classroom 301 of the School of Film and Television. Professor Zhang Xianmin from the Department of Literature at Beijing Film Academy was the keynote speaker. Professor Kim Wansoo, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Yonsei University, delivered a keynote speech to the faculty and students via video link.
This international documentary teaching workshop provided a platform for exchange and learning for documentary creators, deepening our faculty and students' understanding of the development of Asian documentaries. It also offered guidance for individual creative planning and injected new momentum into the future development of Asian documentaries.
In the future, through continuous exploration and practice, more innovative and capable documentary creators will emerge, and Asian documentary education will usher in a brighter future.
