A group of six students led by Professor Li Yiwen, from Design School of Yunnan Arts University (YNAU), was invited to attend the International Design Workshop 2017 hosted by École Intuit.lab, YNAU's partner in France, from January 28 to February 12, 2017 successively held in Paris and Aix-en-Provence, France.
The first session was held on the Paris Campus of École Intuit. lab. YNAU's delegation together with teachers and students of art and design colleges and universities from France, Portugal, Australia, Canada, India and Mexico participated in the exchanges and interactions of different themed design activities.
There are many wonderful works of different styles, such as the font design by the Indian teachers, innovative posters by the Australian teachers and the combination of posters and packages by the Portuguese teachers. Within the busy week, the workshops with different themes were held. From creative thinking to work presentation, many excellent works of creative design had emerged. During the process, YNAU's delegation learned the educational thoughts and techniques from teachers from different countries in the field of creative design. For all the students, participating in the workshops enhanced the understanding about their majors and broadened the international creative vision.
YNAU's delegation then visited the Aix-en-Provence Campus of École Intuit. lab for the highlight of this event: a workshop themed on "Transformation"delivered by Professor Li Yiwen. The teaching focused on tie-dye, a national traditional handicraft technique in Dali, Yunnan, China, giving a comprehensive interpretation of tie-dye techniques in an easy-to-understand and effective way.
The process of tie-dye is like a game from two dimensions to three dimensions, then back to two dimensions. The workshop introduced the traditional Chinese handicraft with unique features and great charm to French students and showed the splendid national art and culture in a relaxingand and pleasant atmosphere. Students from different countries learned about the tie-dye techniques and finished their works with the basic stitches and simple art substitutes. The French students were astonished when they saw their finished works. Appreciating the beauty of each work, everyone felt very happy. During the workshop, the students realized the importance of excellent traditional culture in modern art design through practice and understood the charm of the handicraft with traditional Chinese characteristics.
During their stay in France, the delegation from YNAU also visited some famous museums and galleries in Paris to appreciate the essence of French art and culture. They can see with their own eyes many famous works in art history books and feel the overwhelming beauty. The works of creative art shall be full of vitality. They are not only the presentation of characteristics but also the creative inspiration from the strong regional culture.
Though the teacher and students gave up their chance to celebrate the Spring Festival with their families, they obtained a special and meaningful experience on this precious journey of learning and exchanging. It not only promoted the cooperation betweenthe two institutes but also built a strong emotional bridge between teachers and students, further enhanced inter-school exchanges and cooperation and consolidated the friendship.
