The 2024 "Understanding China" initiative, organized by the China National Committee for the Wellbeing of the Next Generation of the Ministry of Education, was comprehensively launched in colleges and universities nationwide under the theme "Building a Strong Education Nation Through Concerted Efforts". A total of 642 essays, 377 micro-videos, and 50 stage plays were submitted by universities from various provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) and institutions directly under the Ministry of Education. The original stage play Melody of a Devoted Heart, created by Yunnan Arts University (YNAU), was selected as the Best Stage Play in the 2024 "Understanding China" initiative. YNAU received praise during this event.
This stage play was organized and implemented by the YNAU Committee for the Wellbeing of the Next Generation. It was collaboratively created and rehearsed by drama students under the guidance of Associate Professor Shu Yang of the Drama School and Teacher Bai Wenjin of the Fine Arts School. Extensive research, investigations, and in-depth exploration contributed to its development, drawing upon the life of Li Qinghai—an exemplary figure among the old Party members, experts, teachers, soldiers, and models in Yunnan Province and a veteran teacher at the Music School of YNAU. This production seamlessly integrates the art forms of drama, music, poetry, and fine arts, honoring and promoting the rich traditional culture of the Chinese nation. It provides the audience with a significant aesthetic experience and strengthens the sense of national pride and cultural confidence among the teachers and students at YNAU.
Since its creation, the play has been performed for teachers and students at the 7th 9.20 Welcome Gala of YNAU. It has also been featured in the "Zhang Guimei Ideological and Political Lecture Hall—YNAU Subclassroom", utilizing artistic expression to tell meaningful stories of teacher ethics and embody the YNAU spirit. This serves as an inspiration for all teachers and students at YNAU to stay true to their original aspirations and strive forward.
