The Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts is one of the long history art schools in Vietnam. Formerly known as Gia Dinh Painting School (Escole de Dessin) was established on September 1, 1913. In 1917 the school renamed Gia Dinh School of Art Decoration, the only art school in South of Vietnam, the school was the only Fine Arts school classified as a professional school and recognized as member of the Paris Central Association for Fine Art Decoration. This is an important milestone because it is the first time that the students have been approarching to Western art. The school started to train systematically, with scientific methods.

In 1975 Saigon National College of Fine Arts and National School of Art Decoration were unified as one Ho Chi Minh City College of Fine Art.

On September 29, 1981, Ho Chi Minh City College of Fine Art became Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts.
