Brief introduction to universities

Design and Heritages Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan was previously known as Centre of Excellence in Arts and Design (CEAD), Mehran University Jamshoro. The project was envisioned by Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed to have an art and design institution in Sindh on the pattern of National College of Arts Lahore. Then federal minister for Education Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah deputed Prof. AR Nagori to prepare the project. The project was approved by Government on March 08, 1991, with the cost of Rs. 73.754 Million and in PC 1 the area covered was 222,663 square feet. Initially the institution was named as Federal College of Art and Design (FCAD). The foundation stone was laid on July 15, 1992 by Governor Sindh Mehmood A Haroon. and was handed over to University of Sindh; later the construction of the College was handed over to the project directorate of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology on April 11, 2000. FCAD was converted into Centre of Excellence in Art and Design by Federal Ministry of Education, in August 2004 and its academic affiliation was transferred to Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro. First batch was inducted in the year 1999 through aptitude test process and only 20 students could get admission in the institute. The ratio increased with the passage of  time and now more than 600 students are enrolled.

The Institute of Art and Design is an extension of the Department of Fine Arts, which was established as the first art department at anypublic University in Sindh.  The Department of Fine Arts was set up in 1970 by the famous artist A.R. Nagori at the Allama.I.I. Campus of University of Sindh, Jamshoro. Initially, a two year bachelorsdegree, B.A. (Pass) in Fine Arts was introduced in 1985, two-year M.A (Pass) in Fine Arts degree was also launched. According to the job market and demand for the field of utilitarian design in Pakistan, in 2005, design degrees were also introduced at the University of Sindh, the Institute of Art and Design was launched with four (04) departments including the Department of Fine Arts, Department of Communication Design, Department of Textile Design and the Department of Art History. The updated four-year bachelors degree programmes were introduced in art and design both disciplines i.e. BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts), BA (Art History), and B. Design (Textile and Communication). The selection criteria in the discipline of art and design is based on the aptitude test conducted separately from a general aptitude test of the University of Sindh. All selected students are enrolled in individual bachelors degree programmes; however, the foundation year is same for all disciplines. A new addition in the Institude of Art and Design is the Department of Indus Valley Music and Theatre, the one-year diploma course will be offered in Music and theatre studies later this year.
