Yunnan Arts University (YNAU) Summary Report on the Third Music Education Alliance Across the Belt and Road Conference

The Yunnan Tour of the third Music Education Alliance Across the Belt and Road Conference was successfully held in Kunming from October 16 to 18, 2023. The event is co-organized by the Central Conservatory of Music and the Publicity Department of CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee, and jointly undertaken by Yunnan Daily Press Group, Yunnan Net, and YNAU. It adopts the form of "two places and three meetings", with activities such as "Silk Road Music Gathering" - expert lecture and music workshop, "Education and Inheritance of 21st Century Silk Road Music", and "China and the World, Tradition and Modernity" - Silk Road Youth Creation Sharing Session held at YNAU.

This event invited 58 foreign musicians from nearly 20 countries and regions including Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Ghana, Egypt, Mexico, and Argentina, as well as renowned experts and scholars from various sister art institutes in China, to gather at YNAU for a series of exchanges, creative activities, and academic discussions.

On the morning of October 17, 2023, representatives from renowned music and art institutes, scholars in the field of music, and performance teams from various countries and regions entered YNAU at the third Music Education Alliance Across the Belt and Road Conference and held the "Silk Road Music Gathering" - expert lecture and music workshop at Ankang Concert Hall. Ouyang Junhu, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee and President of YNAU, delivered a speech on behalf of the university.

The workshop covers seven modules, including Vietnam one-stringed instrument performance, Myanmar traditional music - pat waing music, Cambodian wedding music ensemble, Yunnan Hani and Akha traditional musical instruments, music and dance traditions of the Anlo-Ewe in Ghana, Takht ensemble, and lectures by the faculty team of the Folk Music Department of the Central Conservatory of Music. Musicians from different countries and different ethnic groups gathered together to bring together characteristic music, the latest academic achievements, and advanced teaching concepts from all over the world, showcase distinctive songs, instruments, and dances from various regions of the world, build a "bridge" for communication between teachers and students in Yunnan and domestic and foreign experts and scholars, provide new opportunities for the integration and mutual learning of music education among countries, and promote exchanges and cooperation in international music education in multiple fields and the development of Yunnan's music education industry.

At 14:00 on October 17, the Silk Road Youth Creation Seminar of the third Music Education Alliance Across the Belt and Road Conference was held in the conference room of Yunnan Arts University Library. The seminar, with the theme of "China and the World, Tradition and Modernity," invited over 10 young composers from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Inner Mongolia Arts University, Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Xinjiang Arts University, YNAU, Mahidol University in Thailand, US-China Music Institute at the Bard College Conservatory of Music, Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Australia, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and Royal College of Music in London to exchange and give speeches.

The roundtable discussion on "Research on Music Culture along the Belt and Road" with the theme of "Education and Inheritance of 21st-century Silk Road Music" was held at the lecture hall of Yunnan Arts University Library at 15:00. During the event, renowned experts and scholars from China, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, and Cambodia gathered together to deeply discuss and interpret their research achievements in various fields of music, such as ceremonial music, folk music, ethnic music, and pop music, and provided suggestions for the education and inheritance of 21st century Silk Road music.

On October 18, special lectures and special master classes given by Professor Xiao Xuejun, Professor Huang Yameng, Professor Ma Wen, and Professor He Yunfeng from Central Conservatory of Music were held at the lecture hall of Yunnan Arts University Library, Ankang Concert Hall and B101 of the Music School.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. Over the past decade, the construction of the "Belt and Road" has taken substantial steps and has become a highly recognized international cooperation platform. Taking this opportunity, artists from various countries gathered at YNAU, further strengthening the communication and exchange between YNAU and artists from different countries and sister institutes. This enables mutual complementarity, integration, and interaction, jointly promoting the inheritance and development of music education. Moreover, YNAU will continue to strengthen its social service function as a higher education institution, enhance its connection with the world with a fresh perspective, and contribute to the prosperity of socialist culture.
