ICH Seminar on the Current Status of Traditional Dance Successfully Held at Yunnan Arts University

From September 20 to September 22, 2019, organized by the Dance Research Institute at the Chinese National Academy of Arts and Yunnan Arts University (YAU) and undertaken by the Dance School of YAU, the ICH Seminar on the Current Status of Traditional Dance was successfully held at the university. More than 60 experts, scholars and representatives from all over the country gathered here for a two-day heated discussion on the protection, inheritance and development of the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) of traditional dance. Huang Yanling, secretary of the CPC Committee and Guo Hao, deputy secretary of the CPC Committee and president of the university attended the opening ceremony.

In his speech, Wang Fuzhou, vice president of the Chinese National Academy of Arts and director of China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center, highly affirmed the remarkable achievements of the ICH of traditional dance and raised high-standard requirements on its future development. Guo Hao, deputy secretary of the CPC Committee and president of the university extended his sincere welcome to experts and scholars from all over the country who gathered in Yunnan to discuss the protection of the ICH of traditional dance. He introduced the university's discipline construction and prospect and called on everyone to consciously shoulder the responsibility for the protection and inheritance of the ICH. Wu Lusheng, director of Zhejiang Provincial Specialized Commission of Traditional Dance, gave a speech on behalf of all experts. He hoped that dance workers would make joint efforts to make positive contributions to the protection, inheritance and development of the ICH of traditional dance.

At the keynote speech part, Wang Fuzhou, director of China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center, delivered a speech titled Building A Heritage System with Chinese Characteristics, clearly and profoundly explaining the meaning of the ICH as a cultural pattern and the aggregation of wisdom which will be the foundation to build a heritage system with Chinese characteristics. More than ten experts deeply analyzed the ICH conventions, evaluative dimension of the ICH programs, protection of the ICH of traditional dance as well as the inheritance path for the ICH of traditional dance into universities, survival environment and restricted zones. Those experts included Jiang Dong, deputy director of the Dance Research Institute at the Chinese National Academy of Arts and doctoral supervisor, Deng Youling, vice president of Beijing Dance Academy and principal of the Research Center for Minzu Dance, Ma Yunxia, dean of Minzu University of China College of Dance and doctoral supervisor, and Piao Yongguang, professor and doctoral supervisor of Minzu University of China. During the panel discussion, experts from different provinces had a warm discussion on the current survival situation of the ICH of traditional dance and offered suggestions on its theoretical research and protection practice.

On the evening of September 20, the Dance School at YAU gave the experts an artistic, cultural and academic performance Yunnan Traditional Dance, displaying the abundant and diverse culture of minority dances in Yunnan as well as featured fruits in the teaching, research and innovation of ethnic and folk dances of the school.

On the evening of September 21, the Dance School organized national and provincial ICH inheritors in Yunnan to put on a great show. Experts and scholars danced together, bursting with passion. The cultural vitality of the traditional dances of ethnic groups was fully revealed. On the morning of September 22, four conveners of parallel sites introduced their respective discussion contents. Five representatives from Yunnan gave free speeches. Later, "the question and answer", "conference summary" and "closing ceremony" were held. The whole seminar was rich in academic atmosphere.

Creatively from the perspective of different disciplines such as anthropology and ethnology, this seminar comprehensively analyzed the current survival situation, protection, inheritance and development of the ICH of traditional dance. The success of this activity indicated that higher importance has been attached to the rescue and protection of the ICH of traditional dance, and it was significant to promote China to further strengthen the protection and development of the ICH under the new development situation.
